Vehicle hits pedestrian on Quentin Road in Palatine

Palatine police said a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle shortly after 8 p.m. at Quentin Road near Kathleen Road.

Police were expected to release details in the overnight hours Saturday. A witness who came upon the scene before first responders did said it looked grim.

Erin Chan Ding of South Barrington said she was driving in the left lane headed south on Quentin Road, south of Palatine Road and just north of Kathleen Road, with her 6-year-old daughter when the car in front of her stopped. She slowed down to get around the car.

"As I was getting around, I saw what looked like a pile of clothes about right at the median," she said.

A closer look revealed that it was a person, she said.

She pulled over her car onto Kathleen Road and called 911. She said suspected the man had fainted or fallen and did not realize he had been hit.

She said she then drove back to the scene and activated her hazard lights to protect the man from getting hit by northbound traffic. "Two other drivers had gotten out and were walking around with flashlights, also trying to direct traffic," Ding said.

It was then, she said, that she saw the man had been hit.

"One of his legs was bloodied, and it looked like he had an injury on his head," he said.

She said an officer arrived and attempted CPR, after which ambulances arrived. She said she then noticed the car that had stopped in front of her had a shattered windshield.

She said a covering was placed on the person.
