Huntley District 158 investigating 'disturbing' photo of bus stopped near moving train

Officials in Huntley Community School District 158 are investigating an incident last week in which a district school bus stopped at an unsafe distance from the rail crossing at Main Street and Route 47 in Huntley while a freight train was passing.

In a message posted on the district's website, officials say they learned of the occurrence when a member of the public shared a "disturbing" photo of the bus near the crossing Thursday morning.

"While the bus was empty at the time this occurred and no harm resulted from the incident, the photo appears to show a very dangerous situation that is unacceptable and not in keeping with our established transportation safety practices," the district's statement reads. "We have launched an investigation to gather all information about this incident."

The district also asks that members of the public avoid sharing rumors about the photo, and that anyone with potentially helpful information contact officials directly at (847) 659-3000.

"We are doing all we can to get to the bottom of this incident and ensure that all necessary actions are taken in response," the district states.

Huntley police Deputy Chief Michael Klunk said the department is not investigating the incident.

The district pledged that appropriate action will be taken to ensure the safety of students using district transportation, reinforce safety practices regarding train crossings and apply appropriate discipline in accordance with employment policies.
