Thieves attempt to steal ATM from Arlington Heights bank

Thieves ripped an ATM at an Arlington Heights bank in the 800 block of Algonquin Road from its foundation Friday night but didn't get very far, authorities said.

Four offenders using a stolen pickup truck pulled the machine off its mount about 9 p.m. Friday, and "attempted to drag it away but were unsuccessful in doing so," said Arlington Heights Sgt. Alexandra Nelson.

Police received a call from bank security about the attempted theft, Nelson said. Police recovered the ATM and the truck a short distance away. No suspects are in custody, but Nelson indicated the investigation continues. .

An ABC 7 Chicago report indicated the offenders were male and fled on foot. ABC 7 also reported the truck was stolen from Bensenville.

The bank was open for business and customers were coming and going from the building as usual Saturday morning. Some cars approached the drive-through to use the ATM, only to move on after seeing at wasn't there.

Bank of America is part of a shopping area that includes National Tire and Battery, a Goodwill Store & Donation Center and Lowe's Home Improvement.
