Freeport man guilty of child sexual assault in Elgin a decade ago

A Freeport man was found guilty this week of sexually assaulting a victim under the age of 13 a decade ago in Elgin.

Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler convicted James J. "Jamie" Boots, of the 500 block of West American Street, of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child Tuesday after a bench trial.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Boots sexually assaulted the victim, who he knew, between April 2009 and October 2010, when Boots lived in Elgin.

Boots had since moved to Freeport. He was arrested and charged in spring 2018 of the felony offense, which carries a prison term ranging from six to 30 years with no chance of probation.

Boots, who has been held at the Kane County jail since April, will be sentenced March 26. He must serve 85% of any prison term and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Boots' bond was revoked after his conviction.
