Elgin man charged in West Dundee woman's overdose death

An Elgin man has been charged in the overdose death of a 30-year-old woman from West Dundee in 2018.

Gehovani R. Gomez, of the 800 block of Bode Road, faces a felony charge of drug-induced homicide in the Sept. 6, 2018, death of Crystal Villegas.

Kane County prosecutors announced the charges against Gomez, who is being held at the Cook County jail on an unrelated case, on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Villegas used heroin that she bought from Gomez, overdosed and died. the Kane County Coroner's office determined her cause of death was from heroin and fentanyl.

Kane Judge Julia Yetter signed a warrant for Gomez's arrest this week and set his bail at $500,000, meaning Gomez must post $50,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Gomez's next court date was not immediately available. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.

According to court records, Gomez was charged in July 2016 with felony retail theft of more than $300 from a Carpentersville Walmart.

He pleaded guilty after serving 38 days in jail and was sentenced to two years probation through August 2018, records show.
