Suspect arrested in break-in at Gurnee cellphone store

A Country Club Hills man faces multiple felony charges stemming from a 2019 smash-and-grab burglary of a Gurnee cellphone store that netted more than $6,000 in merchandise, police announced Tuesday,

Kenshown I. Evans, 19, was arrested Monday on charges of burglary, theft and criminal damage to property stemming from the Jan. 2, 2019, break-in, which occurred about 1:20 a.m. on the 6500 block of Grand Avenue, police said,

Surveillance video from the store captured the license plate of the getaway vehicle, which was stolen, police said.

Later that evening, officers in another town located the vehicle at a gas station and attempted to approach the suspects, police said. The vehicle fled and later crashed in another town.

Officers recovered the vehicle but did not locate the suspects. However, evidence collected from the vehicle and sent to a crime lab for analysis linked Evans and a juvenile to the break-in, police said.

Evans turned himself in Monday after learning a warrant for his arrest had been issued. He appeared before a Lake County judge Tuesday, and bail was set at $50,000.

Charges against the juvenile suspect are being pursued through the juvenile court system, police said.
