16 years in prison for man who shot at Aurora police van in 2017

A 24-year-old Aurora man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after admitting to shooting at three Aurora police officers in 2017.

Jorge L. Guzman, of the 800 block of Superior Street, must serve 85%, or about 13½ years, of his prison term for aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer. No one was hurt in the May 24, 2017, attack.

Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler accepted Guzman's guilty plea Friday.

"This is another example of how gangs and guns create a violent atmosphere that endangers police officers and citizens. Mr. Guzman should consider himself fortunate that no one was killed," Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said.

According to prosecutors, Aurora police officers were investigating a street gang regarding a string of burglaries, including several gun thefts, when three officers in an unmarked Aurora police van pulled into the driveway of a house on East Grove Street.

A vehicle Guzman was a passenger in was driven past the police van and stopped. Guzman got out and ran toward the van.

An officer, who knew Guzman, a gang member, from previous encounters, rolled down the window and yelled "Stop! Police!" several times, according to prosecutors.

Guzman pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the van. An officer in the van fired his gun at Guzman, who hid behind a tree and fired at least three shots in the direction of the van, according to prosecutors.

Guzman receives credit for 948 days served in the Kane County jail while the case was pending.
