One person injured in early morning fire at Elgin hotel

Elgin fire and police officials are investigating a fire early today at the Lexington Inn & Suites in Elgin that caused minor injuries to a person.

The Elgin Fire Department responded to a call around 5:30 a.m. about an activated fire alarm at the hotel, 1585 Dundee Avenue, fire officials said in a news release. Firefighters arrived in just over five minutes and were met by members Elgin Police Department, who said there was a fire in a room on the second floor.

Police spokeswoman Kristie Hilton said officers responded to the same call.

Fire crews extinguished the fire with one hose line and placed it under control within 10 minutes. One hotel occupant suffered minor injuries and was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital, officials said.

The East Dundee Fire Protection District assisted during the fire.

The hotel room had significant water and heat damage and the hallway was exposed a large amount of smoke, officials said. The initial damage estimate was around $10,000.

The fire is under investigation by the fire department's investigation team and Elgin police.

"They are investigating the origins of the fire at this time," Hilton said.

A woman who answered the phone Wednesday morning at the Lexington Inn said that, besides the second floor, the 88-room hotel remained open.
