Buffalo Grove panel to discuss marijauana sales Wednesday

Buffalo Grove's planning and zoning commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing Wednesday on amending the village's zoning ordinance to

add regulations for businesses selling marijuana for recreational use.

The village board ultimately will decide whether to allow recreational marijuana sellers in town, but trustees previously have indicated they're likely to permit sales. They've asked the plan commission to craft a proposed set of regulations on where and under what circumstances sellers can operate in Buffalo Grove.

Recreational use of marijuana becomes legal in Illinois on Jan. 1. Under state law, municipalities cannot outlaw marijuana use, but can ban or restrict businesses that sell it. Towns that allow marijuana businesses can impose an additional 3% tax on sales. Buffalo Grove officials estimate that the tax could generate as much as $400,000 a year for the village.

The commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at village hall, 50 Raupp Blvd., Buffalo Grove.
