Fox Lake Elementary District 114 students served in the community while raising funds for the local PTA organization during the district's fifth annual Day of Service event Friday.

This year's goal is to raise $30,000, according to the District 114, to be used for educational assemblies and field trips, family nights, athletic scholarships, Earth Week activities, school dances, the Lotus and Stanton school libraries, Book Buddies and the mentor program. Long-term projects include developing a STEM classroom at Lotus and redesigning the outdated playground at Stanton.

Students from Stanton Middle School participated in projects at various locations, while Lotus Elementary School students held grade-level service projects at the school.

At the Grant Township Center, more than a dozen students made 12 scarecrows to be used for the Grant Township and Village of Fox Lake Fall Festival at the township center Sunday, Oct. 6. Other project sites on Friday included the Fox Lake Police Department, American Legion Post 703, YMCA Camp Duncan, Camp Henry Horner, Feed My Starving Children, Lakefront Park and local fire stations.

Lotus students decorated hero capes for hospitalized children, made cards for veterans and made care packages for area first responders.
