Geneva eases parking restrictions near high school

Geneva is easing parking restrictions near Geneva High School to allow non-permit parking when school isn't in session.

The city council approved a change to the parking law in that area that restricts permit-parking hours to 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.

Police Chief Eric Passarelli highlighted the results of a study of the residential parking permit program conducted.

While reviewing the day-to-day activity of cars in the area and parking requirements, Passarelli said there is a consensus that parking is available after school and there would be minimal violations.

"We made sure residents were able to get to their driveways," he said.

Passarelli said parking spots in the permit zone begin to open up each day around 3:10 p.m. Following the change, police will not be enforcing parking restrictions in that area, but will continue to patrol and respond to complaints from residents.

"What we're doing seems to be effective," he said. "I don't think you'll see a change."

Mayor Kevin Burns said it will take a while for new signs to be put up to reflect the change.
