Choice to lead Buffalo Grove police-fire panel will often have to fly in from Arizona

A longtime member of Buffalo Grove's board of fire and police commissioners was named the panel's chairwoman Monday, despite concerns about the amount of time she spends out of state.

Jane Dibbern, a member of the panel for more than a decade, was appointed to the top spot by village board members who praised her experience and knowledge of the post's requirements.

"She is an excellent commissioner," Village President Beverly Sussman said. "She knows everything about the commission. She has been part of every little thing going on in the commission."

The appointment came after trustees met in closed session and then publicly discussed concerns about her attendance at board meetings and other functions.

Trustee Joanne Johnson said Sussman agreed to talk to Dibbern "about a last-chance attendance policy in her role as president of this commission."

"Four months out of the year, she is in Arizona and she is not here attending meetings," Sussman acknowledged. "As chairman, she needs to be here, so that was the stipulation that they put down."

The five-member volunteer board is tasked with the hiring of new police officers and firefighter/paramedics, as well as promotions and certain disciplinary matters.

"If you're the chair, it is incumbent for you to be there all the time," Trustee David Weidenfeld said. "Obviously the two chiefs rely on that person being there."

Dibbern said she will "live up to whatever I need to do."

"I think it is vital for the village to have continuity," she said. "I think I bring expertise that will serve the village well."

Dibbern committed to flying back from Arizona when her presence at board functions is needed.

"Thank goodness I have some frequent miles to use," she said.
