Aurora man sentenced to 13 years for child sex assault

An Aurora man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually assaulting two children he knew, officials said Friday.

Mauricio Herrera, 42, pleaded guilty Wednesday to predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.

Herrera is accused of assaulting the victims, who were younger than 13, between 2003 and 2016, according to the release. One of the victims told an older sister, who called police.

His sentence includes 10 years for the criminal sexual assault and three years for the criminal sexual abuse; Herrera must serve at least 85% of the 10-year sentence. He will receive credit toward the three-year sentence for the 512 days he spent in the Kane County jail since his arrest.

In addition to his prison term, Herrera must register for life as a sexual offender.
