Mundelein High officials finalizing $41.8 million annual budget
Mundelein High School District 120 officials expect spending will increase slightly in the new fiscal year, freshly released budget estimates show.
Revenue is expected to decrease, however.
District 120 board members and administrators are finalizing a roughly $41.8 million spending plan for the 2020 fiscal year, which began July 1. That's about 2.4% greater than the previous fiscal year's $40.8 million budget.
Andy Searle, the school's business chief, attributed the anticipated bump to salary and benefit increases.
Revenue from property taxes, fees and other sources is expected to approach $41.9 million. That's about a 1% decrease from the previous year's $42.3 million estimate.
The revenue projection is decreasing because the last of the money from a state grant that helped pay for a 2016 building addition was received last year, Searle said.
The proposed budget predicts a $82,337 surplus for the year.
The spending plan includes funding for campus security upgrades, among them the recent construction of a new security station at the main entrance. Thicker safety glass was installed elsewhere in the building, too.
The work will cost an estimated $180,000, but a federal grant will cover 75% of that total, Searle said.
The budget also includes $60,000 to fund recent repairs to the student parking lot, as well as a new protective coating and restriping, Searle said.
"After such a rough winter there was a lot of repair needed," Searle said.
The 2020 fiscal year is the first in which Superintendent Kevin Myers and other top Mundelein High staffers also will work for Mundelein Elementary School District 75. The two districts will share the financial responsibility for the employees' salaries and benefits, which results in a lightened fiscal burden for District 120.
District 120 officials reviewed the proposed budget during a school board meeting Tuesday. A vote on the budget is expected Sept. 10.
