Salvation Army to build larger center in Aurora

The Salvation Army will build a larger center in Aurora after the city council agreed to its plan Tuesday night.

The council approved a revised special-use permit for the site at 550 Redwood Drive.

The Salvation Army intends to tear down a 17,000-square-foot, 55-year-old building on the 2.49-acre site.

In 2004, the city approved letting a church and school operate on the site, but the building is vacant.

The Salvation Army obtained it in 2010.

According to a city memo, the Salvation Army will build a 23,000-square-foot building, in two phases.

The first phase will have a chapel, lobby, commercial kitchen and community center. The second will be a gymnasium and general space, and include a garage for its emergency-aid vehicles, including a mobile canteen that can serve up to 1,100 meals a day during an emergency.

The Salvation Army has been active in Aurora for more than 134 years. Its current site is at 437 E. Galena Blvd.
