Sprinklers help keep Des Plaines fire under control

Sprinklers helped keep a fire under control and limited damage Tuesday morning in a Des Plaines condominium building, authorities said.

Firefighters were called at 11:13 a.m. to an activated fire alarm at a six-story condo building on the 1300 block of Brown Street. The fire was well-advanced within a top-floor unit and smoke was spreading down the hallway, according to Fire Chief Alan Wax.

Crews launched an attack on the blaze, extinguishing it within 20 minutes. Residents safely evacuated the building and no injuries were reported. Most residents were able to return to their condos in the afternoon, Wax said.

Beyond the unit where the fire started, some other units experienced water and smoke damage, he said.

The cause is still under investigation.
