YMCA 5K, rock bands on tap for weekend at the Taste of Glen Ellyn
There's no reason to wait for Memorial Day barbecues to enjoy summer grilling and the outdoors thanks to the culinary offerings this weekend at the Taste of Glen Ellyn.
The start to everyone's favorite time of year - festival season - begins with the Taste, and like years past, the focus remains on local restaurants and bands.
The village tradition organized by the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce will continue its four-day run this weekend with a dozen restaurants serving crowds along a downtown stretch of Main Street north of the tracks, between Crescent Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue. That's a new venue for the Taste due to the planned redevelopment efforts at the site of the former Giesche Shoes store and the Main Street parking lot between Hillside Avenue and Duane Street.
A carnival run by a volunteer committee separate from the chamber opened Wednesday night and continues through Sunday at the Crescent Boulevard parking lot at Glenwood Avenue.
The B.R. Ryall YMCA "Y RUN 5K" will step off downtown at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration starts at 7 a.m. and costs $40 for adult runners, $25 for youngsters in the "Super Kids" 1-Mile run and $15 for the "Super Kids Fun Run." Proceeds will benefit the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA exercise program for cancer patients and survivors.
Two new restaurants joining the Taste spread are The Glen Station Steakhouse and the 3/7 Pathway Café, a new eatery in the lobby of the Glen Ellyn Public Library.
Fest hours are noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
