Canty, Schwingbeck join Arlington Heights board

New Arlington Heights Trustees Mary Beth Canty and Tom Schwingbeck were sworn in this week, joining the nine-member elected panel responsible for setting the direction of village government.

Canty and Schwingbeck, along with re-elected Trustees Robin LaBedz and John Scaletta, took the oath of office and thanked their supporters during a village board meeting Monday. They were the top vote-getters in a five-way race for four spots on the board, with Laurie Taylor finishing fifth.

Mayor Tom Hayes, who swore in the trustees, presented the newcomers with village logo pins from his personal collection, "circa early 1990s," he said.

"These are the good ones. Wear this one proudly, but also keep good care of it because the other ones aren't as good as this one," Hayes quipped.

Canty, a management consultant and village resident since 2008, thanked family, friends and volunteers who made phone calls, knocked on doors and handed out campaign literature on her behalf.

"I heard an amazing quote today at a lunch that said, 'Our diversity is our strength. Our unity is our power.' I very much look forward to representing all of the residents of Arlington Heights - those who came out to vote and those who did not, and those who will vote in the future," Canty said.

Schwingbeck, president of RNM & Associates, a sales, metallurgical and consulting company, and a village resident since 1988, also thanked supporters.

"I am honored to have been elected by the residents of this village, and I promise to do what's always in the best interest of our town," he said.

The new trustees replace Carol Blackwood and Mike Sidor, who decided not to seek additional 4-year terms.
