Palatine police identify suspect in apartment shooting

Palatine police identified a suspect involved in a shooting that happened late Sunday night, according to a Wednesday news release.

Authorities said they have obtained an arrest warrant for Javier Ponce, 18, of the 1300 block of North Geneva Drive on two charges of attempted murder.

Two male victims ages 15 and 19 were wounded in what police described as a gang-related shooting that occurred during a drug deal about 11:45 p.m. Sunday at the Baldwin Green Apartments.

According to police, the victims were standing near the entrance to a building at the apartment complex when the shooter, now identified as Ponce, walked up to them and began shooting. Ponce then ran to a waiting vehicle in a nearby parking lot, police said.

The 15-year-old boy was in critical condition and the 19-year-old was in stable condition, police said on Monday.

Ponce is a described as a Hispanic man about 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds, with shoulder-length black hair, police said. He has a large "KINGS" tattoo across his throat, police said.
