Maine West, South school newspapers win national honors

The school newspapers at Maine West and Maine South high schools recently took home several awards from national and state organizations.

The Maine West Westerner earned two awards from the national Quill and Scroll Honor Society in writing. Davis Parks and Amaan Siddiqui

received the Golden Key Award (first place) for news writing and sports writing, respectively.

Several students also earned awards from the Illinois Women's Press Association competition, including: Monroe Torkelson with first place in the editorial category; Sarah Smail with first place feature story; Ivonne Sanchez with first place in the environment category; Danny Daood with second place in layout; and Ashley Dwy with honorable mention in the news story category.

At Maine South, the staff of Southwords earned the gold medalist certificate from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In addition, Michael Frazier was awarded a certificate of merit (fourth place in the country) for a photograph. Southwords also earned a first-class rating with a Mark of Distinction in presentation from the National Scholastic Press Association.
