Saturday's snowfall totals at O'Hare set a record

Flights were canceled and events postponed Saturday because of a spring snowfall that dropped up to four inches of snow in parts of the suburbs - and the 1.9 inches that fell at O'Hare International Airport set a record: It's the greatest single-day total this late in the season since records started being kept in 1884.

A winter storm advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. for counties including Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Cook. The National Weather Service says there will be a light to moderate amount of "occasionally heavy, wet snow."

Officials say accumulations of 1 inch or less were expected across portions of southern Cook County. But the northern portion of Cook was expected to see accumulations of 3 to 6 inches by Saturday night, with the highest amounts expected in the county's northwest corner.

It's a similar scenario in DuPage and Kane counties. While the southern parts of those counties weren't expected to see much snow, it was anticipated that the northern areas could see accumulations of 3 to 6 inches.

The highest snowfalls were expected in McHenry and Lake counties, which had the potential to get 4 to 6 inches of snow.

Meanwhile, brief periods of ice pellets are possible throughout the region. Winds could gust as high as 30 to 35 miles per hour, hampering visibility and interfering with travel.

As of 8 p.m., 597 flights had been canceled at O'Hare International Airport and 135 had been canceled at Chicago Midway International Airport, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. Delays were running about 15 minutes.

Tonight's White Sox game with the Detroit Tigers was postponed; it will be played as part of a split doubleheader starting at 1:10 p.m. July 3. The Kane County Cougars game was moved to Sunday.
