Fire at Egg'lectic Cafe in Rolling Meadows leaves $100,000 in damage

Rolling Meadows firefighters spent about an hour putting out a fire Wednesday that left an estimated $100,000 in damage at Egg'lectic Cafe on Algonquin Road, authorities said.

The fire at 2905 W. Algonquin Road was reported at 11:06 a.m., and the restaurant was evacuated by the time firefighters arrived at 11:13 a.m., according to Fire Chief Terry Valentino.

The first crews on the scene arrived to find flames and smoke from the back side of the restaurant. Inside, crews didn't see anything in the dining area, but as they walked further back, they encountered more smoke, Valentino said.

The bulk of the fire was discovered between the roof structure and dropped ceiling, where firefighters concentrated their attack from the inside, he said.

The main body of the fire was struck by 12:10 p.m., after which crews continued to work on hot spots.

A Schaumburg firefighter was treated for a minor injury at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Rolling Meadows firefighters received assistance from seven neighboring departments at the scene.

While the building sustained some damage, the structure remained intact, though it is still subject to review by city inspectors, Valentino said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Fire department officials initially advised drivers to avoid Algonquin Road between Route 53 and New Wilke Road due to the large response of trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. At the height of the response, traffic was shut down to one lane.
