Two injured, driver charged with DUI in wrong-way I-355 crash

A Plainfield man faces a driving under the influence charge after police say he drove the wrong way on I-355 in Downers Grove early Sunday morning, causing a crash that left himself and a second driver hospitalized.

Marco Alegria, 33, was driving a Dodge Caravan south in the northbound lanes of I-355 near Butterfield Road at about 5:20 a.m. Sunday when the minivan collided with the front of a Mitsubishi Gallant, according to Illinois State Police.

The impact caused the Mitsubishi to strike the center concrete median wall to the left of the roadway, police said.

Both Alegria and the Mitsubishi's driver, 31-year-old Kelly Esch of Burbank, remained hospitalized Sunday with nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation.
