Man charged in hit-and-run that killed Aurora boy, injured grandfather

A 28-year-old man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash in Aurora last week that killed an 8-year-old boy and injured his grandfather.

Christopher A. Carrillo, of the 1300 block of Durham Road in Aurora, is charged with failure to report an accident involving death, failure to report an accident involving injury and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury or death, all felonies, according to Aurora police and Kane County court records.

Carrillo also was charged with driving without a valid license and driving without insurance.

Izaiah Lopez of Aurora, a second-grader at Gates Elementary School, was killed, and his grandfather, Juan Ornelas, 53, of Aurora sustained an ankle injury in the March 25 crash.

According to police and the victim's aunt, Carrillo was driving south on Lake Street near Plum Street in a gray 2007 Ford Fusion at 7:42 p.m. when he struck the two as they crossed the street on their way back from a park and dinner at Wendy's.

Carrillo kept driving and later abandoned his car on a nearby street and ran off, police said.

"Over the weekend, Aurora police investigators made contact with Carrillo at his home in Aurora where he was arrested and charged with the above offenses," police said in a news release Monday.

"It is unknown if Carrillo was under the influence of any intoxicating compounds at the time of the crash, but none of the charging documents indicate impairment at this time."

If convicted of all charges, Carrillo faces a punishment ranging from probation to up to 18 years in prison.

His bail was set at $75,000, meaning he must post $7,500 to be released while the charges are pending. He is next due in court on Friday.

After Lopez's death, his aunt began a GoFundMe page with the goal of $5,000 to help pay for funeral expenses. That initial amount was reached within a day and community support continued over the weekend with a fundraiser. The effort has raised $19,487 toward a revised $30,000 goal.

According to Kane County court records, Carrillo does not have any previous felony or misdemeanor arrests.
