Woman dies after being struck on I-294 in Des Plaines

A Bellwood woman died Saturday after she was struck by a vehicle along the tollway in Des Plaines, state police said.

Kristine Humphrey, 27, was the passenger of a Chevrolet Camaro involved in a two-car crash that disabled both vehicles about 5:50 a.m. Saturday in the center lane of northbound Interstate 294, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

She and the driver exited the car and were standing in the roadway when they were hit by a Honda Accord, which also struck the Chevrolet, authorities said. The Chevrolet then hit the passenger side of a fourth vehicle, a Chrysler 300.

Humphrey was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m., police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office said Sunday she died from multiple injuries in a motor vehicle collision and ruled her death an accident.

The drivers of the Chevrolet, the Honda and a Toyota Corolla, which was involved in the initial crash, also were taken to local hospitals with injuries, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
