Two dead, three injured in wrong-way crash on I-355

Two people were killed and three others were critically injured in a wrong-way crash late Thursday on I-355 near Downers Grove, state police said Friday.

A blue Volkswagen Jetta was heading south in the northbound lanes when it hit a black Honda Accord head-on near Maple Avenue about 11 p.m., state police said.

Two other vehicles, a white Ford and a silver Subaru, slammed into the pile after the initial crash.

Robert Velazco, a 36-year-old from Hammond, Indiana, who was driving the Volkswagen, was pronounced dead at the scene by the DuPage County coroner. It's not clear why he was driving in the wrong lanes, police said.

Arshad Mohammed, a 32-year-old from Bloomingdale driving the Honda, was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was pronounced dead at 6 a.m. Friday.

The driver and passenger of the Subaru, Ruth Sangbaan and her husband, Bienvenido, both 66 and from Glendale Heights, were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville with serious injuries, according to ABC 7. Ruth Sangbaan has been released, but Bienvenido Sangbaan was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for observation after suffering a severed thumb, fractured rib and possibly a fractured sternum, ABC 7 reported.

The passenger of the Volkswagen, a 24-year-old man from Brookfield, also was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Dr. Ashad Mohammed was a resident in orthodontics at UIC and working on a master's of science in oral sciences, ABC 7 reported. His friends told ABC 7 he lived in Bloomingdale with his sister and was a very loving man. The UIC orthodontics school was closed Friday in the wake of his death.
