GiGi's Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday with an open house at its Hoffman Estates headquarters at 2350 W. Higgins Road.

The event included a special balloon launch at 3:21 p.m., reflecting the date.

World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness day observed since 2012. Its call to action is for all people with Down syndrome to live fulfilling lives and be included on a full and equal basis with others in all aspects of society.

GiGi's Playhouse, which aims to play a pivotal role in that goal, was founded by Nancy Gianni of South Barrington 15 years ago in recognition of her daughter GiGi. It now has 43 sites in the U.S. and Mexico.
