'My baby!': Bystanders save two in rollover crash in Huntley that killed Addison boy

A 10-year-old boy from Addison died Sunday night when a van he was riding in flipped into a pond at Route 47 and I-90 in Huntley.

Illinois State Police said the crash could have been even worse if not for two men who stopped to help.

Authorities said the boy was a passenger in a 2005 Chrysler van heading west about 6:45 p.m. on the Jane Addams Tollway when it ran off the road on the southbound ramp for Route 47.

Two men who witnessed the crash stopped and helped the driver, a 38-year-old woman from Northlake, and a 10-year-old girl get out of the van.

The boy, identified by the McHenry County coroner's office as Cameron V. Simmons, was unresponsive at the scene.

"They (the men) assisted with getting the subjects out of the vehicle. Without that assist, it could have been a lot worse," Trooper Duane Chapelle said Monday. "They really did a good job."

A video posted by lakemchenrycountyscanner.com, filmed by Kristen Zambo, shows rescue personnel on top of the rear wheels of the overturned van.

"A woman is screaming, 'My baby! My baby!'" says the narrator in the beginning of the minute-long video.

Police said a doctor at the scene provided CPR to Cameron, and all three people in the van were taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital. The boy was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m.

Chapelle said the crash remains under investigation. He did not have information on any citations that may have been issued or if the woman and 10-year-old girl were still hospitalized.
