Issue questions

What are the most important issues facing your community and how do you intend to address them?

We need to maintain tax stability. We need to provide the blueprint for developers that wish to come to the Village and work within our plans for the future. We need to prepare for future pension liabilities so that we are not borrowing just to meet our obligations.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

Unlike many of the candidates running, I have been actively involved in the Village. I have volunteered with many committees, I actually attend Village Board and Committee of the Whole meetings. I stay up-to-date on issues that affect the Village. I know the staff personnel that handles various departments and have worked with all the sitting board members. I have the experience and real understanding of the issues that face our Village. More than anything I don't throw around buzzwords and phrases fed to me by people from outside the Village. Our Village board has always been independent I will fight to maintain that.

Describe your leadership style and explain how you think that will be effective in producing actions and decisions with your village board.

I listen and try to find facts. I was told years ago you base your opinions on facts, not your facts on opinions. Because I seek those facts I can make independent decisions that are in the best interest of the Village. I will always put the Village interest before any outside influence with unknown agendas.

How would you describe the condition of your community's budget, and what are the most important specific actions the town should take to assure providing the level of services people want?

We have a AAA rating from Moody's. Our finance staff has done a good job keeping the Village on solid footing. Our next big challenge will be to deal with our pension responsibilities. With some bonds that will be expiring soon we will have the ability to fund our pension needs to a safe level without raising taxes. We also have real-world situations that need attention. Our Public Works building is starting to cost us money, and we will need to address repairs or replacement. We could also be looking at serious repairs at Village Hall and our Police Department. We still need to see the final consultants report. And we need to be able to do these projects in a tax neutral manner.

What's one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?

Increasing appearance enforcement of vacant buildings. Look to add a more biting ordinance for building appearance on buildings that are 3 or more years vacant. If the buildings and grounds are not maintained it makes it that much harder to lease or sell them.
