District 23 sues over malfunctioning geothermal HVAC systems

Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 has sent a letter to parents and others stating that a lawsuit has been filed over allegedly malfunctioning geothermal heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that were installed in all schools.

Officials said the suit was filed Thursday in Cook County circuit court. Shortly after the systems were installed from 2013-15, the district says, the systems were creating high levels of humidity in classrooms while "successfully" cooling the buildings.

District 23 officials said to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff, moisture monitoring was enhanced. The district's custodians received additional training to improve daily cleaning and prevent any mold or mildew.
