Kane County naturalist conducts hike to look for signs of groundhogs

Kane County Forest Preserve District Naturalist Ben Katzen explained the finer points of hibernation, winter and how it affects animals Saturday during a Groundhog Day hike at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

Participants learned about groundhogs, also known as woodchucks or whistlepigs, and got the chance to look for signs of them. The sleepy critter is among the few native hibernators in the Chicago area.
