Des Plaines District 62 hires principal for North Elementary School

Des Plaines Elementary District 62 has appointed a new principal for North Elementary School.

The school board Tuesday hired Margo Giannoulis to replace Denise Fernandez, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

"It is an honor to be selected as the principal for North Elementary in a district that perseveres for the success of all students," Giannoulis said in a news release. "I am committed and excited to meet and serve the parents, staff and students in District 62."

Giannoulis began her teaching career as a law and history teacher at Kenwood Academy in Chicago for 10 years. She started her principal residency program in 2011 at Phoenix Military Academy. Since 2012, Giannoulis has been credited with turning around multiple elementary and high schools in Chicago with teams of teachers, parents, students, and by involving the community, district officials said.

Giannoulis has served as the principal at Maercker Intermediate School in Westmont since 2016.

"Dr. Giannoulis has an extensive and diverse education background that culminates to a genuine passion for students," Superintendent Paul Hertel said in the news release.

Giannoulis will be paid a salary of $103,000. She starts July 1.
