'The Sleds Are Coming': Ninth annual event welcomes Paralympian Brody Roybal

The Lake Forest College Athletic Department and the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association will host the ninth annual “The Sleds Are Coming” event Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Lake Forest College, 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest.

The Falcons Hockey Association will be recognized with the J.J. O'Connor Award, given each year to someone who demonstrates good character, leadership, and sportsmanship; is devoted to serving as an ambassador in the community; and perseveres regardless of obstacles.

The community is invited to come out to honor the Falcons Hockey Association and meet local 2018 U.S. Gold Medal Paralympian Brody Roybal.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

“The Sleds Are Coming” is intended to bring community exposure to GLASA and showcase its sled hockey program. Community members, students, and staff have the opportunity to watch and cheer on a talented group of athletes.

Currently, GLASA, together with its local community partner Falcons Hockey Association, has one competitive adult team, one recreational adult team and one competitive youth team.

The GLASA Falcons adult competitive team is coached by retired Lake Forest College men's hockey coach Tony Fritz and GLASA parent Andy Burkhart. The adult recreational team is coached by Mike Reinhardt. The youth team coaches are Adam Rosuck and GLASA parent Mike Hurtado.

Since the beginning of this program 11 years ago, the adult competitive team was the runner-up in the National Championship in 2018 and placed first in 2017 and 2013. The youth competitive team was the 2015 National Champion.

The on-ice competition will consist of three, 12-minute periods of 5-on-5 sled hockey featuring members of the GLASA Falcons. The event will also feature:

• Demonstration by the Junior Falcons Mite Players, sponsored by the Falcons Hockey Association;

• Chuck-A-Puck Competition;

• Raffle prizes.
