Pulitzer Prize-winning author, historian headlining Barrington Town-Warming

Barrington's old-time "Town-Warming" program will return next month, headlined by presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

The Barrington Cultural Commission again will host the Town-Warming, a popular event from the 1930s and '40s that the village revived in 2018. Set for Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Barrington White House, the event's theme this year is "Vision 2020: What Leaders See for the Future and the Foundations That Ground Us Through the Ages."

Barrington leaders came up with the Town-Warming years ago in an effort to bring people together in cold weather to learn about issues affecting their community and the world at large.

Goodwin will participate in a "fireside chat" with Greg Brown, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Solutions. Goodwin's latest book, "Leadership in Turbulent Times," draws upon Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson - the four presidents she's studied the most.

Along with Goodwin, plans call for a day filled with panel discussions with noteworthy business, religious, academic and civic leaders. There also will be presentations by Fox News senior correspondent Mike Tobin and Los Angeles Times columnist Chris Erskine, both Barrington natives.

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a Barrington native, and WGN radio talk-show host John Williams headlined last year's gathering.

Tickets for this year's event are limited and go on sale Thursday, Jan. 10, village officials said. It will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a cocktail reception.

A $150 premium ticket will include live viewing of the program in the third-floor White House ballroom, continental breakfast, boxed lunch, the cocktail reception and Goodwin's "Leadership in Turbulent Times" book. A $75 general admission ticket includes everything except that guests will watch the program from a live feed on the White House's first floor.
