Gingerbread houses not just for eating at Libertyville schools

Gingerbread houses aren't just for eating, students in Libertyville Elementary District 70 have been learning this month.

Students in the district have been using gingerbread houses as a platform for education in subjects ranging from literature to problem-solving.

On Wednesday, it was Butterfield School first-graders' turn, as more than 60 students teamed with about 30 volunteers to build gingerbread houses in class.

The students have been reading gingerbread-related stories the past couple of weeks leading to the house-building events. Students also performed a gingerbread-themed play.
