Holiday traffic safety campaign

The Lake County Sheriff's Office is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and nearly 200 police and sheriff's departments across the state to get impaired drunken drivers off the roads and help save lives. The high-visibility Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign runs from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2. Authorities will show zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving and will be enforcing life-saving seat belt, speeding and distracted driving laws. Statistics show 10,874 people were killed in the U.S. in drunk-driving crashes in 2017 - one every 48 minutes. In Illinois in 2017, 349 were killed in alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes. The campaigns are funded with federal highway safety dollars.
