Aurora police mourning death of longtime officer

Aurora police are mourning the loss of retired Officer Marshall Eugene "Sheik" Gauer, who died Thursday at his home at the age of 72.

In a Facebook post, the department expressed sadness at the loss of "our colleague, friend and brother."

Gauer began his service as an officer on Oct. 20, 1969, and held a variety of roles, including as a member of the Gang Anti-Violence Enforcement Leaders Unit, the Burglary Task Force and the Special Response Team. He was also a past member of the Association of Professional Police Officers board.

Gauer retired after 34 years on April 2, 2004.

Services are pending.

The department's Facebook page said, "Rest in peace Sheik. You were truly one of a kind."
