South Elgin man faces weapons, DUI charges after falling asleep behind wheel

A 52-year-old South Elgin man was arrested on weapons and drunken driving charges at a busy Bartlett intersection late Friday, after police say he fell asleep intoxicated behind the wheel with a loaded gun nearby.

Henrique Trevino, of the 0-100 block of Ashton Court, faces misdemeanor driving under the influence and unlawful use of a weapon charges stemming from the arrest at 11:10 p.m. Friday in the intersection of Route 59 and Stearns Road, Bartlett police said Monday.

He also was issued a traffic citation for improper stopping, standing or parking on the roadway, police said.

The arrest came after officers were called to the intersection about a driver who appeared to be asleep in a 2004 GMC Canyon pickup truck. Officers located a loaded firearm in the unlocked center console of the vehicle, police said.

Trevino was released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond. He's scheduled to appear in DuPage County court Jan. 8.
