Homeless man found dead in St. Charles

Authorities are investigating the death of a homeless man whose body was discovered this week in a wooded area in St. Charles.

Neil A. Scroggin, 45, was pronounced dead Tuesday after officials found him lying in the snow near Oak and West Main streets, police said in a news release Thursday.

A man reported Tuesday evening that he was concerned for the well-being of his employee, who was believed to be homeless and had not shown up for work, officials said. Police discovered Scroggin near a tent where he apparently had been living.

An autopsy was performed by the Kane County coroner's office, which is working with police to determine a cause of death. Authorities say there is no indication of foul play. Toxicology results are pending.

Investigators have been interviewing people who knew Scroggin and searching the area where his body was found.

"At this point, the last we know anyone had contact with him was on Sunday," Deputy Police Chief Erik Mahan said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cmdr. Chuck Pierce at (630) 443-3827.
