Police: Gang member brought AK-47 into Rosemont
A reputed gang member remains in custody at the Cook County jail following his arrest on allegations he brought an AK-47 rifle and dozens of rounds of ammunition into Rosemont Wednesday.
Julio C. Perez, 30, of Chicago, faces two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon, a single charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and two weapons-related misdemeanor charges stemming from the arrest, police said.
According to Rosemont police, detectives investigating Perez on Wednesday saw him carrying a long narrow object wrapped in a towel and placing it in the trunk of a vehicle. Based on various sources, that object was believed to be a rifle, police said.
Detectives followed the vehicle into Rosemont and pulled it over near the 10400 block of Carol Court, according to police. A later search of the vehicle turned up an AK-47 rifle, two 30-round magazines of ammunition and 11 additional bullets inside the trunk, police said.
Authorities say Perez is a documented and self-identified gang member.
A judge Friday ordered Perez held on $750,000 bail. He's scheduled to return to court Dec. 6. If convicted of the most serious offense, Perez would face up to seven years in prison.
