Elgin man sentenced for child rape in Philippines

A 64-year-old Elgin man received a 15-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to repeatedly sexually assaulting a child in the Philippines while visiting the child's mother.

Donald Scott Coleman was accused of assaulting the child in 2012 during a multiple-month trip he made to the Philippines to visit the child's mother, whom he had met online. Coleman made several trips to see the woman between 2009 and 2012, authorities said. The mother often left the child in Coleman's care while she was away.

Federal prosecutors said Elgin police provided "substantial assistance" in the investigation.

Coleman pleaded guilty last year to the crime. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for release, prosecutors said.
