Ceramicist Bates to share his work at Oakton Community College Nov. 29

Prominent Chicago ceramicist Ben Bates will discuss his unique techniques at a free public Visiting Artist Series event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, Room 1100.

"While Ben's work at heart consists of traditional designs, he strives to embody the essence of artifacts without just reproducing them," Oakton Chair of Art and Design Lou Pierozzi said in an announcement of the event. "Ben uses a collaborative process to communicate feelings and ideas without specifics so his compositions are mysterious while evoking multiple interpretations."

Bates' work has been widely exhibited and is part of numerous museums, galleries and private collections. The Libertyville resident has been an artist, teacher and curator in the Chicago area since 1988. He is currently a studio artist and ceramics instructor at the College of Lake County.
