Vernon Township road district on way out

Vernon Township voters overwhelmingly eliminated the local highway district and shifted oversight of its duties to the township board.

The decision means the elected highway commissioner post will disappear starting in May 2021. That could save about $109,000 in annual salary and benefits.

With all 41 precincts reporting, unofficial results showed voters overwhelmingly favored the idea by a margin of 17,580 "yes" to 5,909 "no." Proponents have said residents shouldn't experience any service changes. Roads will still be plowed and repaired as needed.

Vernon Township is headquartered in Buffalo Grove. The road district maintains about 13 miles of local roads and less than 2 miles of roads in nearby West Deerfield Township.
