DeWitte hangs on to state Senate District 33 seat

Don DeWitte held on to his post as 33rd District state senator Tuesday.

DeWitte, a Republican, defeated Democrat Nancy Zettler of Algonquin, according to unofficial results.

With 100 percent of the Kane and McHenry counties votes counted, DeWitte had 40,869 votes to Zettler's 38,393.

DeWitte, the former St. Charles mayor, was appointed to the seat in July.

The two disagreed over whether the state should implement a graduated income tax.

They also disagreed about the use of tax-increment financing districts, with Zettler characterizing them as another way of increasing property taxes for all other landowners, and DeWitte defending them as a tool to encourage economic development.

Senate District 33 includes parts of Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Elgin, South Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia.
