Hands (and heads) on experience with exotic animals at Grayslake library

The Scales and Tales Traveling Zoo program visited the Grayslake Area Public Library on Sunday, giving about 80 kids and adults attending a hands-on, up-close look at a variety of animals.

Professional trainers and animal handlers Beth Wagner and Emily Barabe showed creatures including chinchillas, baby chickens, a potbelly pig, a tarantula and an umbrella cockatoo.

For more than 20 years, Wagner has been presenting her program, educating kids about the animals they encounter.

She encouraged kids to touch, pet and ask questions during the hourlong program.
