FBI: Bank robbery suspect captured after trying to use stolen cash

A 39-year-old Barrington man linked to three recent suburban bank robberies was captured last week after he tried to use stolen cash to make a wire transfer at his own bank, authorities said.

Eric M. Dill faces a federal bank robbery charge stemming from the Oct. 10 holdup of the BMO Harris at 94 N. John F. Kennedy Drive (Route 25) in Carpentersville, the FBI announced Monday.

Dill also is a suspect in the Sept. 22 robbery of the BMO Harris Bank at 40 S. Barrington Road in South Barrington, and the Oct. 10 holdup of the US Bank at 1301 Irving Park Road in Hanover Park, according to the FBI. He has not been charged in either of those cases.

According to court documents, a man matching Dill's description walked into the BMO Harris in Carpentersville about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10, wearing a Chicago Bears cap, a gray zip-up hoodie and glasses. He also carried a large, tan bag across his body, documents state.

The robber approached a teller and handed over a note reading, "This is a robbery. You have ten seconds. No dye packs, no bait. I'm in a hurry," according to the affidavit of an FBI agent.

The teller handed over about $3,774 in cash, which included 10 $50 "bait" bills, for which the bank kept recorded serial numbers, court papers state. The robber then asked for the demand note back and left, according to the FBI agent.

Later that day, authorities say, Dill entered the Barrington Bank & Trust in Barrington, where he was a regular customer, and asked to make a wire transfer with $4,000 cash, according to the FBI. Among that cash were the 10 "bait" bills, authorities say.

Dill was arrested the next day and admitted to robbing the Carpentersville bank, authorities said. He also gave the FBI consent to search his home, in which agents found a sweatshirt and a Chicago Bears cap matching the items worn by the bank robber, as well as a tan bag, court documents state.

Dill appeared in federal court Friday and was ordered detained until his next court appearance.
