Candidates make their cases to represent House District 64

A political newcomer from Volo said she will serve as the voice of the people if elected to represent the state House 64th District, while her opponent touts his experience as a two-term Lake County Board member and says he'd better serve constituents.

Democrat Tricia Zubert, 38, and Republican Tom Weber, 51, of Lake Villa are running to replace current state Rep. Barbara Wheeler, a Republican from Crystal Lake, who did not seek re-election. The election is Nov. 6.

Zubert said she is a bookkeeper and former school board member with St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Mundelein, where she served a term as school board president. Weber is a construction business owner who is leaving his Lake County Board District 3 seat.

The 64th House district incorporates Antioch, Lake Villa, Volo, Fox Lake and Lakemoor in Lake County, and portions of McHenry, Woodstock, Bull Valley and Crystal Lake in McHenry County.

Zubert and Weber made the comments during a recent on-the-record candidate endorsement interview with members of the Daily Herald editorial board.

Weber said he has crossed party lines to get things done as a Lake County Board member. He also said he listens to constituents when deciding how to vote, but is willing to listen to experts when making tough choices on complex issues.

"I've worked with Democrats and Republicans on different issues," Weber said. "Yes, sometimes as an elected official, you have to make hard decisions. You also have to listen to the people in charge and take their advice."

Zubert said she is the best candidate because she will put the beliefs of residents above her own when voting in Springfield.

"The representatives are representing their own personal beliefs, and that's why we are where we are," Zubert said. "We need someone in this district who is only interested in being the voice of the people who live here."
