Report of shots fired in Round Lake Beach leads to school lockdowns

A report of shots fired Tuesday afternoon in Round Lake Beach led to the soft lockdown of two nearby schools, authorities said.

The report of shots fired on the 900 block of Clarendon Drive led to the lockdowns at Round Lake High School, about a half-mile away, and John T. Magee Middle School, about a mile away, according to Chief George Filenko of the neighboring Round Lake Park Police Department.

The report, initially unconfirmed as of 1 p.m., may have been legitimate, Filenko said Tuesday night.

He said Round Lake Beach police are handling the investigation. Authorities there didn't immediately provide additional details Tuesday night.
