Naperville man charged with using stolen credit cards to pay court fines

Bond was set at $100,000 Tuesday for a Naperville man charged with felony identity theft for using stolen credit card information to pay his and others' court fines, prosecutors said.

During a court appearance, Brenton Thurman, 28, of the 0 to 100 block of Olesen Drive, was also ordered by DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden to show that any monies used for paying the required $10,000 bail were not obtained illegally.

The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said Thurman made multiple payments to the DuPage County Clerk of the Circuit Court Office in March 2018, adding up to about $6,000. Thurman took cash from people to pay their fines and fees, prosecutors say, but kept the money and used stolen credit card information to pay the clerk's office.

The clerk's office uncovered the scheme and contacted the state's attorney's office to conduct further investigation, according to a news release.

Thurman is due in court again Oct. 29 for an arraignment.

Authorities say Naperville man is tied to 'numerous' identity theft cases
