6 years prison for 2017 Carpentersville apartment shooting

A 24-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to his role in a January 2017 shooting at a Carpentersville apartment complex in which a man was hit in the leg.

Stephen L. Brown, of the 400 block of West 117th Street, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and other felonies from a Jan. 3, 2017, shooting on the 0-99 block of Oxford Lane.

Brown's case was set for trial in Kane County next week and, if convicted, he faced up to 30 years in prison on the most severe charge.

Instead, Brown pleaded guilty last week to a reduced charge of attempted aggravated battery with a firearm in which he admitted to firing shots at others with the intent to injure, according to Kane County court records.

Under the plea agreement that was accepted by Judge James Hallock, prosecutors dismissed remaining charges and Hallock recommended, at Brown's request, that he receive substance abuse treatment while in prison, records show.

Under state law, Brown can have his sentence cut in half for good behavior in prison. He also received credit for 588 days served at the Kane County jail while his case was pending.

Carpentersville police said they were called at 3:46 p.m. Jan. 3 to the Fox View apartment complex for a report of shots fired. Police found blood and shell casings, but no victim, so they called area hospitals.

Authorities located the victim, a 22-year-old Chicago man, at a hospital and used security video to identify Brown as a suspect. The victim was hospitalized for about two to three days and Brown was arrested later that month in Calumet City, police said.
